February is Black History month and while I am conscious to celebrate art work created by all races and genders, I could not pass up the opportunity to incorporate the Black Arts Movement into my class. I mention this because many of my students asked me why there was only one month to celebrate Black History – a question I wish I had a good answer for.
We spoke about how the Black Arts Movement gave Black artists the power to use their voices to tell their stories. We then spoke about how we might use our voices and what our message to the world would be. We then used markers to create colorful posters to put our message out in the world!
Work from grades 1-3.
